Worried Chinese Officials Search 10,000 Pigeon Rear Ends For Bombs
Fearing a potential terrorist attack, Chinese officials decided to carry out an ‘anal security check’ on a total of 10,000 pigeons.
And, not only did they check the bums, but also the birds’ feathers and legs.
Officials performed the check before the pigeons were released as part of a celebration of National Day in Tiananmen Square.
People’s Daily reported that the “anal security check for suspicious objects” took place at the beginning of the week before Wednesday’s celebration.
Since a number of separatist attacks occurred in Beijing, the security in the city was heightened. Although a pigeon bomb attack sounds improbable, British spy chiefs considered such a possibility during World War II. The idea was to train the birds to fly to enemy territory carrying either explosives or biological weapons. A Wing Commander confirmed this plan in secret wartime documents released in 2004.
“A thousand pigeons each with a two ounce explosive capsule landed at intervals on a specific target, might be a seriously inconvenient surprise.”
