A die-hard 68-year-old fan of Cliff Richard drives everywhere with a dummy of the pop singer belted beside her in the passenger seat of her Peugeot 206 in order to keep criminals away from her.
Jill Stolworthy first saw the legend perform 55 years ago and now takes his dummy anywhere she goes to feel safer.
She and husband David bought Cliff’s head at a car boot sale in 2012 and then made him a body from MDF with a cushion “to give him a bit of chest”. Apart from dressing the doll, they also put him a pair of aviator sunglasses on because they claim his eyes are too intense to look at.
“We got the head because we like Cliff Richard – Jill especially is a big fan – and it just escalated from there. We thought he would be particularly useful when Jill is driving on her own, especially at night, so it looks like there is a male passenger.”
Jill says all her friends also love Cliff and adds that she has seen him sing all over the UK.
“I have got about 22 of his CDs and some DVDs. One of the old 45s we have got in the loft is from when he was in the Drifters. I saw him when he came to the theatre in Norwich in 1959 – I remember queuing up to get tickets and he was just fantastic that night.”
