If you’re a farmer tending your land, it’s not uncommon to uncover something strange. You might find the remains of a dead dog or two every now and then, but it rarely happens that you have something prehistoric.
And that’s exactly what happened to an Australian man last week. Robert Hacon, who has a farm in Queensland, found the fossil of an enormous prehistoric sea creature on his land. The fossil is estimate to be more than 100 million years old.
Haron didn’t think much of the discovery when he first uncovered the bones. He figured that it was just another fossilized mussel shell, which is something that he runs into on a regular basis. But he could not let it go.
He went back to the spot of the discovery about ten minutes later and started digging. In the end, he could not believe how big the bone he uncovered was, and he knew that he had found something special that you don’t see every day.
So what the heck is it? Well, it turns out that Haron has uncovered the fossil of an extinct carnivorous marine reptile known as Kronosaurus queenslandicus.
The fossil that was uncovered was absolutely huge, but believe it or not, according to experts, this beast was not even fully grown. According to Timothy Holland of the Kronosaurus Korner museum, the creature died young and still had a lot of growing to do at that point. A full grown Kronosaurus could have a skull that was two meters in length, which is even larger than a grown Tyrannosaurus Rex skull.
