Environmentally Friendly Bank Robber
On May 5, an armed and masked robber entered UniCredit Bank’s premises in Belgrade, Serbia, demanding money from the bank employees. After the employees activated the police alarm, robber fled down the street, riding his bicycle! He didn’t leave the bank empty-handed, but took around 2 million Serbian Dinars ($23800) 23.000 Euros ($31500) and $2000.
This robbery happened around 10 a.m., downtown Belgrade. According to witnesses, he came to the bank riding his bicycle, and as he entered, he yelled “This is a robbery! Give me all your money!” He pointed a gun to bank employees behind the glass counter. At first, bank workers were standing still, petrified, which only made the robber angrier.
He then yelled “Move! Common, give me the money!” After that one of the bank workers put the money in a bag and hand it over to the robber. He then ran out of the bank, took his bicycle and vanished into the streets of Belgrade, just before the police came to the scene of crime.
One of the police investigators said that everybody in the bank seemed to be frightened and in a state of panic, but apparently robber had an accomplice in his unlawful deed. According to the unnamed police source, bank received a “significant amount of money” an hour before the robbery, which probably means that somebody from the bank gave away this information to the robber.
Bank’s security worker was unable to prevent or stop the robber, standing still at the bank entrance. Police officers collected data recorded by security cameras. Luckily, everything is recorded – robber’s arrival, course of robbery and the most important moment – his environmentally friendly getaway. Police are making a digital sketch from collected material, and soon will compare with the photos in criminal database, hoping to discover robber’s identity.
This is not the first case of an eco-friendly criminal. Two years ago a man has been stealing purses from women on the streets of Banjaluka, Bosnia & Herzegovina. He would approach them riding his bicycle and snatch purses from their bare hands. Eventually, he got arrested, and Belgrade’s robber will probably end up in prison, as well.
These events cannot mask the importance and true beauty of a bicycle ride, just as long as it is legal.
