Diaper Theft – Crime Beyond Reason
This weekend was pretty hectic inside North Carolina Diaper Bank, according to reports. Apparently, no less than 13,000 diapers were stolen from their Durham-based premises, where this nonprofit stores diapers for struggling families.
Michelle Old, Founder and Executive Director of the company went to the office on Monday, to pick up an order that was supposed to be distributed to a local homeless shelter. However, when she came inside she found the order scattered around the floor, with some specific sizes of the diapers missing.
According to Old, diapers in size four and five are difficult to acquire in sufficient quantities, and even more to keep them in stock, since babies wear them up to a year. According to Old, they were already low on those specific sizes, and now thieves took them all.
Last Saturday there was a church-organized volunteer group present in the Diaper Bank building, and they helped to re-wrap 6,000 packages of diapers, for further distribution in the community. Shelves were completely filled on Saturday, and today diapers are missing even from a reserve room, known only to the members of organization.
These diapers apparently turned up at local yard sales and were even being sold on the street. Many people contacted Old to report on this diapers being offered to them in the downtown area for $4 per package, with Diaper Bank tags still attached to them.
This bank was established a year ago, with a goal to distribute around 50,000 diapers per year, but they distributed almost 140,000 of them in the period of eleven months. Although the bank has been seriously damaged with this theft, they will continue to collect and distribute diapers.
Old also added that all they can do right now is get the word out and try to re-fill their shelves. With no long-term budget running, and every penny going strictly toward buying diapers, this bank is in no good position. But, they are determined and nothing will stop them from “covering bottoms”.
We can only add that since there is such a thing as a diaper bank, maybe a diaper police needs to be established, to keep the criminals out of the way. And with some luck, maybe the regular police will find some amount of stolen diapers, and return them to Diaper Bank.
