Lady With A Beard – A Man In A Dress
This year’s Eurovision winner is Austria, headed with Conchita Wurst, who performed Rise Like a Phoenix. This would be just another pop-song-contest win, if Conchita Wurst didn’t have a beard! Conchita is actualy Thomas Neuwirth, a former member of Jetzt Anders boy band. This band was formed back in 2007 by Starmania, Austrian casting show. That year Jetzt Anders reached the final. In 2011, Thomas, then already performing as Conchita, came back to the show, later to be selected as Austrian Eurovision competitor.
Her appearance at Eurovision has raised many discussions, even in the highest political circles. Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky said that her win symbolizes the end of Europe, adding that there are no longer men and women, but only “it”. Russians even started shaving their beards collectively and posting photos around the web, in the name of protest against the Eurovision’s contest results.
Thomas used to wear dresses even as a child, secretly and safely hiding in the attic-space of his family home in Bad Mitterndorf, southern Austria. But for Thomas, a fashion graduate, his alter ego is “simply an artistic creation”, although he completely behaves like a woman when he is Conchita. In interviews Conchita explains how girls usually don’t mind when she uses female toilets and adds that sometimes she even borrows a lip-stick or lip-gloss.
Winning Eurovision contest will certainly make Conchita even more popular, but she is already well-known in her homeland, since she already won second place on talent show The Big Chance in 2011, and has appeared in some others.
Commenting on her win, Conchita dedicated the award to everybody who believes in a world of peace and freedom. For some, this is not only a win for Austria, but for the whole Europe as well. Those who are in favor of Conchita’s winning claim that she did something that generations of politicians couldn’t do – she managed to unite Europe.
When it comes to appearances, this bearded woman is quite lady like, glamorous, gracious, gentle but strong. For the final night she picked a long sparkly gown, and wore it like a real woman. And the beard, her trademark, was an excellent accessory. This was a long-awaited prize for Austria. Last time they won Eurovision contest was in previous century, way back in 1966.
Criticized or praised, Conchita has a lot to thank to everybody who voted for her on this year’s Eurovision.
